Week 4, March 14-20

This new chapter is about time management and is one of the most powerful chapters in the text.  For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal.  If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it.  My lifetime goal was to write a book on how to be successful in college because I struggled as a young college student and learned how to be successful.  Then I taught the topic for 30 years.  I had some time off from work and set as my goal to write the text.  I found myself distracted by things around the home.  I would get up in the morning and exercise, make myself a nice breakfast, read the paper and do a few household chores.  Soon the day was gone and I had not accomplished my goal.  I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with exercise and other things that I wanted to do.  It was just a matter of rearranging my tasks.  I still found it difficult to get started.  I used the idea of a leading task.  I would just sit at the computer, fill my head with ideas and start to write.  Then I would refine the writing the next day.  Within 6 months I had the first draft of the text written.  Today it is used in about 60 colleges across the country.  The CollegeScope material is my latest project.  Ok, I have shared one of my goals and how I accomplished it.  Now it is your turn.  Tell about something you accomplished in the past of something you hope to accomplish in the future.  See if you can use some of the time management ideas in the text.

  1. One of my lifetime goals at this point in time would be, mantaining a healthy physical body. I havent yet started my lifetime goal but i always tell myself i will eventually get to it. A few steps i would take to actually getting my goal started would consist of actually making myself realize and understand the importance of a good health and whatever else more there is to learn. I would also start making myself feel more motivated to maybe start jogging once or twice a week , i would want to place this as a first priority of my day because if not then i'd probably procastinate and never get to it. After having a consistant jogging schedule every week i believe that would have enabled a great start in my health, and an extra little push to go ahead and get a gym membership. After i get my gym membership, i would start off going every other morning, which would be the days that im not jogging. I believe with this goal and the time arragements i have set i will learn to accomplish everything i have in mind.

  2. Maintaining a healthy body is a great one Mercy. It's one of those really hard ones that takes a lot of commitment. Good luck to you! My current goal is to be successful in college. I am graduating from high school this year and can take all the advice I can get. I am excited and scared all at once. What I had in mind was to start organizing myself. I am not the best when it comes to organizing myself and would probably benefit from giving it a try. I plan on keeping a planner to schedule my assignments, a calendar in my dorm to remind me of things that might be going on during the week, and multiple clocks and timers to keep track of time. I like working sporadically so knowing how much time I have before deadlines would come in really handy and keep me from missing deadlines.

  3. Adriana thanks for your response!!! Im going to try my best to get a healthy body, hopefully. I think you have a really great lifelong goal in mind. I found myself struggling at first when i started Cuyamaca, but hey look at it on the bright side. Your in high school and taking college classes already, must mean your smart!!You just have to be committed and stay dedicated to your future.I tend to have to put daily alarms myself to remind me of doing things as well, with the homework assignments every monday i make a list of what it is i need to finish by each Sunday and try to get everything done within 2 days. Just dont procastinate! It's not good and im sure you've learned about that in this weeks chapter.

  4. One of my lifetime goals I would love to accomplish is being a lawyer before I reach the age of twenty-six. This is something that I have a great passion about learning and would love to make a difference doing this as a career. I've always felt that it is important that our government is fair and that we work on keeping our community safe from criminals. An obstacle that could get in my way of this is getting distracted from finishing school in time in order to reach my goal. As well as not believing in myself whenever it starts to get really tough in school. I know that the only way that I can reach this lifetime goal of mine is to stay strong and finish school!

  5. One of my lifetime goals is to live out a healthy and active lifestyle. The reason this is a lifetime goal for me and so many others is because a healthy lifestyle is a happy lifestyle. To live a healthy lifestyle I try to eat well, exercise as much as possible, and engage in recreational activities. A common problem with this goal is that it requires a lot of time and dedication. Being a full time college student and full time worker can cause stress and lead me away from that healthy lifestyle. I use time techniques such as starting homework early and not procrastinating so I can participate in those physical activities.

  6. Another lifetime goal of mine is to get a career having to do with business management. This is a new goal for me and I'm hoping the small steps I've created will work out for me. Some of the steps for my goal include my college courses to earn my degree, saving as much money as possible for the future, and working with my business. Time will always be a factor in reaching goals, so I will have to use whatever techniques necessary to reach this goal. At the moment this is my number one goal. The first step for getting my degree is hitting the books. I believe if I study enough and use my time efficiently, my courses will be a success. Thats only step one, but I'm sure once I start this process there's no stopping me. The main thing for everyone who is looking to succeed in college is to use every second of your time.

  7. A lifetime goal of mine would also be to live a healthy lifestyle. I am not at my desired weight at this present time and I would like to get in to more activities. I would also like to try eating healthier so that I can better my health and appearance. I think that health and physical looks is important to a lot of people because being healthy, in all honesty, does make you feel and look better. Plus it gives you a confidence that if you can succeed at staying healthy then you can succeed in other places as well.

  8. One of my lifetime goals is to be a good provider for my family. That is much more complex and broad than it sounds. This will entitle me to have a career that pays well and one that i will enjoy doing for majority of my life. Almost everything that one does in life is intertwined with the other things that the individual does. So enjoying my career will hopefully allow me to be in a cheerful mood most of the time. And if I'm payed a decent salary my family will be able to have all of the things that they would like and need so that they can at least be a little happier. Hopefully this will also allow me to be an impeccable role model for my family as well.

  10. One of my lifetime goals is a popular one, becomming a physically fit and aware person. One who uses the knowledge of healthy eating and active lifestyle to maintain a healthy body and mind. I have not truly enjoyed the results of an active, healthy lifestyle in a while. I got injured in a pretty serious car accident and still have some residual issues as a result. Yet, I let it dictate what my health goals would be. So instead I have chosen to plan out the goal of a healthier lifestyle through exercise, and education without procrastination. I created a schedule, with rewards built in. That has a set time/weight goal and some flexibility.

  11. Another big lifetime goal for me is to get my college degree. I am still somewhat unsure as to my career path, although I have some specific interests in a few degree programs. Currently I am working on procrastination and time management before this chapter arrived. I have gotten good grades during the fist semester as a reward for hard work and effort. But this semester my home life and work schedule are very different. I have to manage my time and money more and often have to say no to more people and not feel guilty about it. Those are the most difficult obstacles for me. Facing the expectations of others and telling them I am not available due to school is hard at times. I am saying no a lot it seems. But getting used it and making the time to spend with those important to me by scheduling it prior to the event as opposed to relying on free time for get togethers.

  12. One goal for my life is to be the best me I can be. Improving my character is a daily job that I sometimes forget to focus on. To avoid forgetting, keeping a journal would be helpful. Keeping track on paper will give me a visual idea of my progress. I think it’s important to give myself a pep talk regularly to remind myself that I can believe in me. There is no ultimate goal here, but rather a goal to improve some each day. Achieving this, will help me to accomplish the other life goals I have.

  13. One of my goals in life is to finish school and have my career in RN (registerd nurse) done before I turn 26. And doing so I'm going to make a schedual, so that I can manage my time. Also to keep me on track and not miss something that's going to affect me now or later on in the future. I will also manage my job hours so that I won't be too pressured in having to chose between my education and work. I will always make sure that I have enough time to do any homework assignments, projects, or study for an exam or test. And finally I will not put too much pressure on myself when it comes to school, because I will give myself rewards every once and a while when I've accomplished something important.

  14. One of my other goals in life is to learn how to handle my money. And the first step that I will take to help me is by making a budget. Then make a plan on what I'm going to spend my money on by making sure what is a want and what is a need. And by doing that step it will really help me figure out my bad purchases. And by following the first step I will be saving money and be able to put some of it into my savings account, so that the account will keep on increasing and my spendings decreasing. And if I have any obstacles in my way like when I go shopping and I want to buy myself a bag or more shoes. I will tell myself over and over no, until I walk away from the store without spending any money. And I will also try to learn how to say no, when people ask me to borrow money. Because letting people borrow my money won't just affect me , but them as well because they will never learn how to handle their own money.

  15. One of my lifetime goals is to continue on the path of being healthy. I have struggled with weight all my life and am now at the weight I need to be and it took me a minute to find a plan that works for me. I have overcome my weight issues by eating more raw fruits and vegetables, cutting out sugar, carbohydrates and meat. I have increased my protein intake and have a great balance between body and mind. Being healthy does not necessarily mean that you have to be thin it’s about how your body and mind are in sync by making sure you have a good nutritional base, great stress relief program and good exercise plan.

  16. One of my other lifetime goals is to be financially secure and stable. This I have been working on throughout my lifetime by setting up a 401k plan through work. Once I get settled in San Diego I will be looking for additional sources to invest my money in. I have already researched a few avenues and found that CD’s, for short term investments, is the best for me, at the moment. I can purchase CD’s for a specific time period and once that time period ends I can remove my money to use it as a down payment on a house or condo and not get penalized. I will also look into investing my money, long term, in a Roth IRA. Being financially secure not only means investing your money but paying closer attention, now, to where your money is going. I recently started paying more attention to my cash in and out flow and save all of my receipts so I can really see where my money is going. As well as I have set up a budget. Combined all of the above will assist me in reaching my goal.

  17. My main lifetime goal is to be a successful social worker for young children in foster care, or for abused families. Right now I am at Cuyamaca College preparing to transfer next fall. I have been able to manage my time wisely by focusing on school as my priority. Many of my distractions are watching TV, taking naps in the middle of the day, due to lack of sleep, and being on the internet while trying to finish homework assignments. Now, I am 5 months pregnant and I know that having a baby will slow me down a little while trying to finish school. Though I am goal oriented and very confident that I will succeed, even with the responsibility of taking care of a child.

  18. Another goal that I feel is important is financial stability. It is important for me to be responsible with my money so that in the future I can make investments and buy a home for my family. Some things that I do to manage my money are spending on necessities rather than wants, cooking instead of eating out, and keeping my money in a bank so that I can build a savings. I am already working on building my credit by using a credit card. My mom taught me how to use my credit card wisely, without going in to debt. She told me that the best way to use a credit card is to only spend what you have in your account at that moment. That way, when it comes time to pay off your credit card balance, the money is already there and you won't have to make payments and pay interest. Being financially stable will benefit me when I am ready to start my career and family.

  19. Similar to the student above me, one of my goals is financial responsibiloty. This person seems responsible in their money management and I only wish I could say the same. I spend constantly on petty things and don't save very much. Between rent, going out to the bars, and the expensive recreational habit of golf, I need to find ways to cut back on these to look towards the future. I can start by getting drunk at home and then only buying a drink or two at the club. Rent is something that I can't avoid, but I can cut back on expenses such as lighting, water usage, and how many times I do the laundry. As for golf, this will be the toughest thing to avoid. I could start by golfing at less expensive courses instead of pretending to be Tiger Woods and going to Torrey Pines. Financial responsibility is something I need to attain to get ahead in life.

  20. Similar to many of the students in this class, my other life goal is to graduate from college. The entire process has been such as struggle for me and it took me until the age of 26 to figure out what I needed to do to succeed. I wasted so many years and look back on them with such regret. I constantly have to remind myself not to look down on myself for being so wasteful but try to be positive about it in that one day I can look back and be proud of myself. I need to avoid procrastinating and manage my time wisely to succeed. Even in this class I find myself finishing things on the weekend rather than knocking them out during the weekdays so I can enjoy my weekend. Once I get that right balance of time and energy, success is inevitable.

  21. One of my life time goals is to find and maintain career in health care as a radiologist technician. There are a few obstacles that stand in the way of this goal. One is the limited amount of programs that provide radiology training in San Diego. The second obstacle is finding hospitals in San Diego that are hiring for this position. My time management technique for this is in present time to keep taking classes in the field of radiology or similar to radiology to learn important information that will help me when I do get accepted. In addition, I am giving myself to the end of May to see if I get in to one of the programs in San Diego, and if not then start looking out of state for schools and programs. Same goes for when I complete the program is look close to San Diego and California and then expand out. I believe if I stick to my time lines that I will be able to achieve this goal and all the essentials that go along with it.

  22. One of my lifetime goals is an important one and that is graduating from college, along with my degree and diploma. My degree is on the classes that are required for me to take, on my road to graduation and that is Business Administration. At the moment, that's my number one priority. The obstacle that stood in my way was procrasination and time management. Throughout my time in college, I've managed to deal with it and now I'm in a pretty good position to graduate this year. Sometimes, the assignments for my classes can be straightforward, but it can be difficult when it comes down to managing your time in all of your classes. Nonetheless, I've been able to focus my energy and heart on getting my business taken care of.

  23. Another lifetime goal of mine is being a businessman. It might be an monumental goal, but I believe that I can be apart of the business world. When I get my associate degree in Business and get a job, I will be working hard non-stop. Furthermore, I'll be working 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, on my road of creating my own corporate business. In order for me to achieve that, I have to make an business plan, promote, advertise and invest in my business. I believe that I would be on the front page news around town and become famous.

  24. I agree with Christina on one of my other goals is to have financial stability. I would like to take the same steps that you have picked to help with that. I would love one day to own a home in La Jolla right on the beach! So as soon as i find my career I would like to start saving up for the house I always dream of. Also, I have started building my credit a little paying for an apartment when i was in college.

  25. Like most of you my life goal once was to graduate from college. This was a big accomplishment for me I had many set backs while in college however, I kept pushing forward and only graduate a semester behind. You all will be very happy once you accomplish this goal. It will open up lots of doors to help u be successful. Good luck to all of you!

  26. By reading chapter 4, I've learned very useful tips in order for y to accomplish reaching my lifetime goal, which includes not waiting last minute to do school work because it can reduce the quality of my work, learning to make a schedule of what I need to do (A priorities), along with everyday things (B priorities), so that I can also fit time into having fun and hang-out with friends (C priorities).
A way for me to be financially stable is to learn to budget how much I spend on things I need, not spend more than I have, and don't become in debt from too high interest rates in credit cards. I should rather pay as I go so that I can avoid this. Also, I should make sure to differentiate between what fantasy's I have versus what goals I have because fantasy's aren't reality, where goals take action.

  27. One of the biggest goal's I hope to accomplish in my future is to graduate college. I started right out of high school, wasn't doing all that well, I would drop some classes or fail some. After a couple of semesters, I decided to take some time off and really evaluate what I wanted to do with my life and re focus myself. This is my first semester back, so I feel like that a lone is a big step for me. It is still really hard, and by no means easy but I feel that I have grown and matured over that time off. I still need to take this journey step by step, and keep thinking of the final product, which is a college degree.

  28. Another goal of mine is to maintain a healthier lifestyle. Every time I go to the gym, I feel so much better about myself, I eat better, I am more energized and am just happier in general. Before school started, I was working out quite a lot, but then school started and with two jobs and five classes, it just got to be too much. Now that I have a routine established, it will be easier for me to get back in the gym, which will lead to maintaining a healthier diet, and make me feel more productive.

  31. A lifetime goal of mine is to write a children's book. I've had several ideas over the years, but have yet to put anything down on paper. With work, school and a family, I've often thought I was too busy to achieve this goal anytime soon. However, if I were to schedule time just two days a week to work on this goal, I believe I could accomplish it. As an incentive, I could create my own workspace that would allow me to focus simply on the story and presentation. A major motivator would be to share my work the following day with my two boys. This special time with them would not only be a reward for me, but it would give me great feedback on the progression of my story. Everybody wins.

  32. One of my lifetime goals is to exercise more. Its really a challenge for me to exercise every day because I am very lazy and that is the main obstacle for me. For me to overcome this obstacle I need to motivate myself to exercise more by telling myself that I will feel better and I'll be more healthier for exercising everyday. All I need to do is at least an hour of exercise a day. Also to help me accomplish this goal I am taking tennis at college right now.

  34. You have to mid-term in your literature class and Have to read 400 pages in one month. I have to know approximately how many pages I have to read daily and track this I will make my job easier but have opportunities to read more pages daily rather go to the library to read to concentrate more, and then at night when the quiet at home may move a little more, I make small notes to help you remember what I'm reading, I got support material in order to understand what's in the book, find a friend who took this class to explain to me what I'm good reading, I am excited and pass this class if I achieve my goals

  35. Another future goal is to be financially secure once I am forced to retire. My hope is that the economy will soon change so that I am able to put some of my education to use in getting a job. Until then, I will continue my courses and try to find time to do volunteer work that will require my skills. I plan to look into work experience as well.

I’ll have to do this periodically through out each day in order to keep up with it. Hopefully this will also allow me to be an impeccable role model for my family.

  39. One of my lifetime goals is to graduate from college and get in the field of Social Work. I am 26 years old and I can honestly say that I have spent a lot of that time giving up on my goals, my finances to help others reach their goals and be in a better place financially. I have invested so much time on helping the wrong people who honestly just used me because I'm a 'YES' person, and they really took my niceness for weakness. Now after being hurt by someone who I saw as a great friend, I have realized that I wasted so much of my life and that now it's the time for me to get back on track, get back to school, and finish what I started. I will no longer be the person who you can call at 3am because you are drunk at home and feel sick, or because you need a ride, or money, now I will say 'NO' I have things to accomplish and don't have the time to dedicate to others. I have decided to work part-time which I know might be tough for the pocket, but I am lucky enough to live at home and have a family that understands my education is important. I will also prioritize my life, exercise to keep my mind and body relaxed, and really take my time to focus on my homework. Like my dad and sister say; “No one will do whats best for you except yourself, you are #1 and that's the only person that needs to matter in your life.”

  40. I can really relate with all the with all the goals to stay healthy and exercise, be more financially responsible, and improving my character. At this point in my life I am not the most fit person and I think if I want to be able to keep up with future kids and just be healthy I need to step up and watch what I eat, stay active and really dedicate myself to that goal just like a lot of us will do. I also think a lot of the tips to be financially responsible are really good and I myself am someone who gets a check, it lasts a week or sometimes even a weekend, and then important bills come around and I have nothing. I have been really irresponsible when it comes to my money and right now being unemployed I wish I had been more responsible with my finances. As far as my character, I really like the fact that Susan suggested keeping a journal, it's a very good way to being more aware of your thoughts and feelings to see where you might need improvement. I have been someone who had low self-esteem and now I'm really trying to focus on the fact that I am a great individual and I don't need people in my life to make me feel complete, I am someone who will reach their goals and doesn't need certain “friends” to fulfill me or entertain me.

  41. Well, one of my most desired things to do in life was to become a childbirth educator and a birth doula. Last summer I decided I would work on becoming a doula. I put my mind to it, took my classes, read the materials, and have already assisted on about 7 births. I am continuing my education as a birth doula by getting my certifications. I have accomplished what is required and simply need to mail my information in. The other think I am workin on accomplishing is becoming a childbirth educator. I am intending on attending a childbirth education class on June 10, 2011! With this education I will be able to teach childbirth education both privately and in the hospitals. Once I made the decision to take this courses, I did. I have a two year period to get my certificate as a birth doula and have acocomplished my requirements within my first year.
