Communication Scenarios:
Read each scenario and use your knowledge of personality type to suggest ways to improve the communication. You can comment on one or more of the scenarios.
Scenario 1 (E and I):
Mary and Carol are roommates and are discussing paying bills for the apartment that they share. Mary is upset because Carol paid the phone bill late. The more that Mary talks, the quieter Carol becomes. This causes Mary to become even more upset. Mary starts talking in a loud voice and Carol leaves the room. How can they improve communication?
Scenario 2 (S and N):
A sensing type and an intuitive type are on a first date. What is each likely to talk about?
Scenario 3 (T and F):
Rachel and Jim have been married about a year. Rachel complains to Jim that he never says, "I love you" anymore. Jim replies that he would not have married Rachel if he didn't love her. How can they improve communication?
Scenario 4 (J and P):
Students in a business class are assigned as a group project to design a business plan. This is an evening class and has mostly adults who have busy schedules with work, family and school. Mike is a highly motivated student who wants to get the group organized and complete the project quickly. Mike is getting irritated at John because he cannot decide on a topic and get going. John keeps coming up with different creative ideas for the business plan. John is getting irritated at Mike because he thinks that Mike is trying to control the group. How can this group work together to complete a successful project?
Critical Thinking:
Give an example of a fallacy in reasoning. Here are some examples: 1. When my children were very young, I would tell them to brush their teeth in the evening. I told them that if they did not brush their teeth, the sugar bugs would eat their teeth all night and eventually their teeth would turn green and fall out. By predicting dire consequences, we try to influence behavior. This is an example of using slippery slope. Maybe some of you child development majors would have a better way of getting children to brush their teeth, but this worked for me. 2. Here is another example: When my daughter was in middle school, she died her blond hair black. I asked her why she did it and she said that she was tired of blond jokes. She was the victim of the stereotype that all blondes are dumb. 3. You will also find many examples of fallacies in reasoning in commercials and political speeches. Can you provide other examples of fallacies in reasoning?
Creative Thinking:
For the creative thinking part, read about creativity and brainstorming and have a little fun with this exercise. Provide at least 3 answers to these questions: 1. How is a peanut like you? Here are my answers. 1. A peanut is wrinkled, like me. 2. A peanut is curvy like me. 2. I have a hard outer shell and a soft inner shell. How is a peanut like going to college? In every classroom there are at least 2 nuts, the instructor and at least one student. The squares on the peanut remind me of rows of chairs in the classroom. 3. There is usually something good on the inside.
Communication scenario:
ReplyDeleteScenario number one : i believe its best if the two settled things out in better ways. i understand its irratating when some bill doesnt get payed on time but the best type of communication that Mary and Carol need is to come together and maybe Mary should ease down a bit to Carol because as you can tell Carol is the type to stay quiete and doesnt look towards the argueing or trying to fight so she just walks her way out of problems, which is best since their roomates. Mary may need to let Carol know how much it bothers her inside when bills arent paid on time. The key is to communicate amongst them to know what they need to get done. And in order to explain you need to be calm. So my best advice for them two is to learn how to talk and stay calm and explain what bothers Mary, and at Carols best interest maybe not stay as quiete because some people get frustrated with that.. so some feedback would do.
An Example of my fallacy in reasoning would be one that i said to my friends niece. One for instance was i would tell her that if she didnt shower that she would turn black like the street, caused her to cry.. yes it was mean.. now i realize, but it made her shower because she didnt want to be the color of the street.
ReplyDeleteAnother example would be me telling my friend niece that if she didnt stay quiete that the " police" would come to get her. That way way we got her to not only stay quiete but when we were in public places she would know how to act right and not pout over everything. Enabling us to have a pieceful time when we were watching her as well.
For scenario #1 dealing with communication with an extrovert and a introvert, each roommate needs to understand their personality types. Knowing and respecting each others personality type will establish mutual respect between the two. Mary the extrovert should give Carol time to think and talk about the problem. Yelling at Carol doesn't help the current problem. Carol could make an effort to talk to Mary. When someone doesn't talk about their problems and walks out of the room, I could understand why Mary became frustrated. If Carol can make an effort to communicate, as well as pay the phone bill on time, she would be better off. Overall, Mary and Carol need to respect each other and talk about their problems. Developing a strong relationship will most likely solve their problems.
ReplyDeleteI work in a retail environment, and fallacies in reasoning are noticeable throughout the store. The company sells a wide variety of goods such as clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, fragrances, tools, and so much more. Our sales representatives don't directly tell the customer that our products are better, but they use selling techniques that make the customer feel as if any other product is going to fail on them, unless they buy from our store. When your working in a business that is based of commission, sales representatives will say whatever is necessary to finalize the sale. Customers are bombarded with issues such as warranties, product quality, and value. The reasoning behind a retail business is customer satisfaction, and the truth may be twisted if you have your head down.
ReplyDeleteThe sensing type will look more in to looking at what the intuitive type is doing and acting whether it is reading there body language or taking in account of what they say is what they actually do. The intuitive type will need to express to the sensing type by showing that they care rather than just saying that they are and that they are interested. On the other had the intuitive type will look very deeply in to what the sensing type is talking about and will start gathering information on the topics and will then make a decision on how to react or what exactly the sensing type is looking for.
ReplyDeletescenario 3-
ReplyDeleteThey both need to give and take make more an effort in expressing I love you to each other. Jim needs to say I love you more or act in ways more visible to Rachel that she knows for sure that he loves her. Maybe leave her notes that say I love you, give her flowers and so on. On the other hand Rachel needs to look more into Jim’s action and the way he reacts to see how he does still love her maybe noticing he does things around the house or around other people.
Jim needs to show her his love by buying her flowers, chocolate, or showing her small signs of affection. On the other hand. Jill needs to realize that when Jim says he would not have married her if he did not love her, he means it. I think that in this situation they both need to compromise. Jim by showing her he loves her with the little actions he does (or just saying it to her) and Jill by knowing even if Jim does not show it well that he loves her.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to scenario number 1, the extravert and introvert need to have a better understanding of one another to settle their differences. In this scenario, the extravert should not yell at the introvert, but rather be rational and give the introvert time to respond. Yelling won't solve the problem. They need to talk with one another and figure out a compromise to meet both parties needs.
ReplyDeleteAn example of a fallacy in reasoning is recently when I heard a fellow student appeal to pity with our teacher. He was trying to get an extension on a paper by throwing out all kinds of excuses such as being under the weather and the computer being down. He was trying to get the teacher to feel sorry for him by using excuses that made it seem as if he couldn't complete the assignment because of his problems. Obviously the teacher wasn't having any of this and gave the student an F.
ReplyDeleteScenario 1 (E and I):
ReplyDeleteIt appears as though Mary is an organized individual and her personality makes it to where she likes things to be done on time and in an orderly fashion so that it doesn’t cause her more problems in the future. Carol is just the opposite. So this leaves a huge gap for communication. The change needs to begin with Carol. She needs to open her eyes and see that life involves responsibilities that are serious and life altering. Once she begins to understand this concept she’ll be on a good track. Running away from problems solves nothing either. Yes Mary shouldn’t be raising her voice but Carol almost leaves her no choice. Carol at least needs to listen and participate in a solution so that they can both be happy and find a simple median.
Scenario 3 (T and F):
ReplyDeleteIt’s understandable that Rachel would like to hear Jim say more often that he loves her. It will remind her of the love that he has for her and that they share, and will make her emotionally more excited and happy inside. However, Jim makes a valid point; he would not have married her if he did not love her. So here is where the tricky part comes in. The situation needs to be looked at from both perspectives and from an open-minded point of view. Since they both make a valid argument, one of them has to realize certain facts of their lives together. This could be a number of things, and this is more than likely going to be realized by Jim. If he remembers the love that he has for this woman and is one with her delicate feelings, he will see that saying “I love you” more often is not only not a major sacrifice, but it is actually more called for. Giving your life to someone is a major commitment and stepping stone in life, and should be cherished by both parties. Every situation needs to be taken into account and both individual’s feelings should be felt.
In response to scenario #2, the sensing type will look to collect information from the intuitive type, based on body language, feelings and personality. The intuitive type will have to respond to the questions that the sensing type might ask. Sensors want to talk about concrete events like the people known before, the experiences that they’ve had, and the places that they’ve traveled to. Intuitive people have to gather information from the sensing people and look for possibilities, meanings, and relationships between ideas. Overall, their values and communication skill levels have to be equal to each other. The sensing types need intuitive types to deal with the changes that are coming and understand different perspectives. On the contrary, intuitive types need sensing types to deal with facts and details about themselves.
ReplyDeleteIn response to scenario #3, Jim and Rachel have to show more affection towards one another, in order to have a well-structured marriage. They have to seek for things that can maintain their relationship, not what they can get out of it. For instance, Jim needs to say “I love you” more often or doing things that are romantic, such as buying flowers, chocolate, writing a poem or making unconditional love to his wife. Rachel should be more respectful and less demanding towards her husband, so that way she can be very supportive to him. They can’t have disagreements towards everything that relates to their marriage, or else it will escalate into countless arguments. Specifically, they have to stay present to their connection and communicate with one another about the same topic. Also, they need to be creative and discover love together.
ReplyDeleteCreative Thinking:
ReplyDeleteHow is a peanut like you?
There is a protective coating and it takes some effort to break through to the really good stuff. We both have nice a nice curvy shape and we both have a lot of flavour.
How is a peanut like going to college?
Peanuts and college are both fulfilling. Sometimes you can’t just eat one. Sometimes eating a bad peanut is like having a bad teacher, leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but you still keep eating the peanuts.

Communication Scenario 1: Mary and Carol can improve their communication by each taking a turn to talk and explain where they are coming from. Also, Mary needs to not be quite so angry and approach Carol in a calmer manner. Obviously Carol isn't a confrontational person and Mary needs to respect that. On the other hand, Mary needs to stand her ground, and yes she didn't pay the bill on time, but no one is perfect, she needs to admit to her mistake and promise it won't happen again.
ReplyDeleteCreative Thinking: A peanut is like me because 1.) Its hard to crack me open and dig down and find the real me on the inside. 2.) I can leave you, with you always wanting more. and 3.) There are a lot of different brands to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm a very open person, but at the same time I hold a lot of things in, and only my closest friends know the real me. People say I am a generally fun person to be around, so I "leave you with you wanting more." And I have many different groups of friends (brands) because I have done so many different things in my life.
For Scenario #2 the Sensing type is most likely to talk about their working environment, current activities they do, and anything going on in present time. Would most likely ask questions pertaining to what they do for a living, what kind of things do they like to do, and stay within their comfort zone of what is happening in the moment. The Intuition would be talking about where they are going in life, what they want to do in the long run, and just any plans that they have going on and might want to involve the Sensing type depending on where the date goes. The sensing type will be trying to figure out where the Intuition type stands right now in life while the Intuition type might be trying to see where the Sensing type is going with their life and if they want the same thing. Just like with any date you want to see that you have similar goals and it's someone who will help you be better and move forward and not keeping you behind.
ReplyDeleteAn example of my fallacy in reasoning comes from when my new neighbor introduced himself to me one morning but oddly he attempted to do it in Spanish and I responded to him in English since I noticed he had difficulty speaking Spanish. After I responded he looked a little thrown off and told me he was shocked I spoke English because a lot of the Mexicans that lived around him in other “ghetto” areas didn't speak English and he thought maybe it was because illegal immigrants chose these areas to avoid immigration. I felt completely disrespected and I made it aware that not all the people that speak Spanish are Mexican nor are they illegal because you live in a more modest area. Let it be known that I live in the Golden Hills area near Downtown San Diego and although some homes are much older than mine, it is in no way a bad area.
ReplyDelete“Mary and Carol are roommates and are discussing paying bills for the apartment that they share. Mary is upset because Carol paid the phone bill late. The more that Mary talks, the quieter Carol becomes. This causes Mary to become even more upset. Mary starts talking in a loud voice and Carol leaves the room. How can they improve communication?”
ReplyDeletePrior to the relationship even getting to this point, regardless of personality types, ground rules need to be set as far as when bills are due, and who is responsible for collecting the funds and making the payment. They both need to realize each handle situations differently however being responsible for paying the bills is important and needs to be addressed immediately. It seems that Mary is more organized than Carol so she should take on the bills and collect from Carol. Instead of yelling and upsetting not only herself but carol as well, have a calendar with the due dates of the bills and when the funds should be handed over to Mary so she can pay them. This way there is no miscommunication as to when bills are due, because all bills that are due are written down for all to see.

The more that Mary talks, the quieter Carol becomes. This causes Mary to become even more upset. Mary starts talking in a loud voice and Carol leaves the room. How can they improve communication?
ReplyDeleteFirst off before becomming roomates both need to "iron out" an agreement that covers elements like housework, bills, guests, pets and so forth. It will help to avoid this particular circumstance. But, if this was not done ahead of time here would be my solution. Mary should take some time to calm down before she speaks with her roomate. Putiing some thought into what she hopes to gain from her conversation with Carol and what possible solutions she would be willing to accept. She may also need to consider creating a system of how bills are paid to insure they are timely. Carol also has to accept responsability for her actions by explaining why the lateness occured and how it can be avoided in the future. Also working together to create a better way to resolve differences. It is obvious that Carol does not like confrontation and avoids it. So she and Mary need to plan ahead, and have open, timely discussions often about household expenses and other issues to alieviate problems of this sort.
ReplyDelete1.)A peanut is like me because we both have a beautifully curved body. A peanut in a shell has a very distinctive appearance, as do I with my curvy hourglass figure. 2.) The color of a peanuts shell is tan as is the color of my skin. Although the color varies due to size and texture, just as mine does from other women and often changes due to my exposure to sun, water and wind. 3.) We are also alike in terms of how we can be salty to the taste, or dirty when not washed. As am I after a trip to the beach or river, or some good exercise. 4.) Yet we are both tasty and satisfying on the inside. While you can chew a peanut and it fills your belly with goodness and good feelings, so does my warmth and laughter fill your belly with joy and good fellings. I never considered it before. 5.) But we are alot alike in our ability to produce pleasure for some while also we may present challenges for others. Some may be allergic, or just dislike the nut or me. but overall I think it's all good for both me and the peanut.
For the first scenario it’s all a matter of really getting along. Mary obviously has dominance over Carol and Carol doesn’t really do anything about it. What needs to happen is Mary needs to give Carol the chance to explain. For Carol she needs to not allow someone to speak to her that way. Communication between anybody can be done correctly if both are willing to take the time to listen to one another and acknowledge what the other is saying. What also needs to happen is whenever someone gets annoyed or angry for anything the other person need to let he/she vent for a little then step in and say what they need to say.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this it reminds me of something strait out of a comedy. Obviously the intuitive type is the guy. He’ll think he looks cool with his leather jacket. Active as if he knows how the “ladies” would react to any situation. He’ll be waiting for the right moment to say what he needs to say to have her in the palm of his hand. But little does he know the sensing type, of course the girl, is absolutely sure this guy has no chance. She knew as soon as she saw him at the front, looking for her table. But she still walks up to him and gives him a chance because deep down she’s a humanist and thinks the best of people. And also if she didn’t there would be much of a movie now.
ReplyDeleteCritical Thinking:
ReplyDeleteAn example of a fallacy in reasoning is when I used to tell my little brother that if he ate the black seeds from a watermelon, that he was going to grow on in his stomach. And so every time he ate watermelon he would make sure he took the seeds out before he would eat it. And I only said this not to be mean, but to take care of him and prevent him from accidently choke on a seed cause sometimes the seeds were just a little too big. And my lie helped by preventing him an accident. sometimes we just have to lie to little kids, so that they would understand, even though when they get older they'll find out sooner or later that we lied to them.
Another example of a fallacy in reasoning is when my mom used to tell my little brother that if he didn't behave inside the stores, that santa was going to put him on the naughty list and wasn't going to bring him any presents for christmas. The only reason my mom told him this was because he would start crying and pound his feet on the floor because he wouldn't get what he wanted. And it actually worked cause it was his favorite season of the year, and every time we would go to the store my mom only had to say no once, and he would just stay quiet.
ReplyDeleteMary and Carol can improve communication by first attempting to understand each other. Identifying how each person communicates can get this process started. If Mary goes into the conversation knowing that Carol may be introverted and talk less, Mary could plan to speak quietly, speak less and provide pause after speaking to invite Carol to respond. They also need to clearly identify the issue, share responsibility, identify the consequence of future mistakes and come up with solutions. Instead of making "You" statements, Mary should approach Carol with "I" statements. Doing so will welcome Carol into the dialogue and hopefully be the start of finding a resolution.
ReplyDeleteHow is a peanut like me? 1. I am of nature! Were were both nurtured and grown with care and proper nutrients in order to fully grow and make people happy. 2. As George Washington Carver found out, we both have many uses! We can be enjoyed on our own in our natural state or used to compliment a larger idea (peanut butter and jelly, anyone?) 3. You can finsd us both at baseball games! Though the Padres are struggling this year, we'll both try to bring a smile to your face.
ReplyDeleteHow is a peanut like going to college? 1. You sometimes have to work to get to the good stuff. 2. Once complete, you can have quite a mess on your hands (I'm thinking cracked shells and student loans) 3. You tend to need peanuts and education throughout your life!
Mary, who is and extrovert, can fix the communication problem that she is having with her roommate Carol, who is an introvert, by letting her have the opportunity to think and process what Mary is telling her. That way carol will in return respond to the concern that Mary is having about the phone bill being payed late. The problem they were having before is that Mary would be too much for Carol, feeling like she may not be able to put in whatever she may want to say. Which caused her to leave the room. Mary needs to learn that her roommate may need to be approached differently and be given the opportunity to express herself as well.
ReplyDeleteScenario 3:
ReplyDeleteRachel and jim both need to make the effort towards each other so that both of them equally feel that they are loved by their partner. A way that they could do so is doing little things the other person loves, such as writing love notes for the other person and leaving it on their night stand so that they can wake up to it. As well as just taking the time to embrace the other person and just letting them know how much they mean to them and how happy they are to be with them. By just giving a little effort to say that they love the other person whenever you come home or wake up next to them can make the other person feel that they are very loved.
scenerio 3-
ReplyDeleteI think that jim should still tell rachel I love you. he can also take her out to places just to show that he cares . I dont think that just by saying i marrid you because i love you shows how much he realy cares about her. the reason why she asked him is probably because she wasnt feeling the love from him anymore.
i think that an example of fallcy would be my mom always tels the kids dont stare at the computer or tv for too long or else youll be blind. she does that so that way the kids would not watch a lot of tv and instead just go do some outdoor activities.
ReplyDeleteCommunication
ReplyDeleteScenario 1:
When I was away at school in Mission Viejo I had 3 roommates. It was hard living with that many people but we managed to make it work. Mary and Carol need to know how to communicate better. Instead of Mary yelling out of anger she should have sat Carol down to explain the problem, then Carol might have been more suseptible to understanding why she was mad. And Carol, she should have given prior notice that she was going to be late on rent so that it wuld not be a surprise and the other roommates would be able to figure out a way for it to get paid in a reasonable amount of time.
Communication
ReplyDeleteScenario 3:
Rachel's personality requires confirmation of acceptance. Even though Jim states that he loves her because he married her, he is not expressing his love to her in a way that makes her feel secure. Every once in a while Jim should take the time to tell Rachel how he feels about her. Maybe a date or family dinner would do the job. Also, Rachel should communicate how she feels about it in a better way so that Jim fully understands her needs.

ReplyDeleteEscenario 3 :
Mary and Carol could communicate better by being aware of their own communication skills, or lack thereof. If Carol and Mary were able to understand their differences in how they hear and share they both might feel better understood when they are communicating. Carol and Mary both have a responsibility to respect one another by listening to what each other has to say. The problem is that Mary needs to learn how be patient with Carol allowing her time to hear, process what she is hearing and to respond to what Mary is sayingwithout shutting down and walking out of the room. When Carol walks out of the room, she puts a wall up now allowing for communication, which likely only frustrates Mary all the more.
ReplyDeleteAn Example of my fallacy in reasoning would be one that I tell my son all the time and it is one I heard myself as a child. If you go to the bathroom (number 1) outside youll get a sty in your eye. He is 23 now and no liehe went to the bathroom outdoors and woke up the next day with something bothering his eye. I reminded him, if you go to the bathroom outdoors youll get a sty in your eye. I seriously think he believes this to be true!
I am like a peanut because I am shapely, I have lots of good taste and I am strong. This peanut likes college a lot because I enjoy the other peanut in my class. There are many dry roasted peanuts, salted and non salted peanuts and there is even southern style peanuts that are steamed!
